Las Vegas

Plaza Hotel

There are many reasons to live in or visit Las Vegas and San Miguel County: clean air, outdoor recreation, access to quality health care, availability of education, respect for diversity, charming old-style houses nestled together, with newer neighborhoods where you can find classic modern homes, northern New Mexico architecture, two National Forests within minutes of downtown, and the feeling of small town America with a bit of an edge. Close to Santa Fe and Taos, it's the perfect center for an exciting vacation.

Windsurfing is popular at Storrie Lake State Park, while Fort Union National Monument contains the remnants of a frontier-era fort along the Santa Fe Trail, built in stages from 1851 through 1891. At one time the largest and most prosperous city in New Mexico, Las Vegas hosted America's political and business elite in the late 19th century. They came to hunt, to bask in soothing hot springs and to partake in the gilded living provided at Montezuma Castle, an opulent 1884 resort now on the grounds of the Armand Hammer United World College.

Teddy Roosevelt recruited many of his famed Rough Riders from the Las Vegas vicinity and you can see memorabilia from that era in the Rough Riders Collection on display at the Las Vegas City Museum.
