Des Moines

Capulin VolcanoDes Moines is a small farming and ranching community surrounded by rolling prairies, and is located at the foot of Sierra Grande Mountain. Situated on a high, unprotected plateau, Des Moines is colder in winter and cooler in summer than any other town in Union County. The rocks in this section are mostly lava or malpie from the nearby volcanoes.

The most famous of these, pictured to the right, is a 1,000-foot-high symmetrical volcanic cinder cone 12 miles west of Des Moines at Capulin Volcano National Monument.
