Cimarron

Located on the eastern slope of the Continental Divide, Cimarron was a one-time stop on the mountain branch of the Santa Fe Trail (1821 -1880) and remains one of the few truly historic towns of the Old West.

Here, visit the St. James Hotel to see bullet holes still left in the ceiling from frontier era gunfights. Not only desperadoes, but also traders and mountain men frequented the hotel, and some claim they have never left, their spirits continuing to haunt the premises.

Near Cimarron, the Boy Scouts of America operate their sprawling Philmont Ranch. There's a museum on the ranch dedicated to the famed naturalist Ernest Thompson Seton, and another museum occupying the reconstructed 1850s hacienda of legendary trapper and scout Kit Carson. A preserved 1860s mill built by Lucien Maxwell houses the Old Mill Museum, boasting historic exhibits and usually a live buffalo or two.

Cimaron serves as the gateway to some of New Mexico's best elk country, notably in the 100,000-acre Valle Vidal as well as nearby state parks and wildlife areas.
