Get Your Sopaipilla Fix at Bruno's Restaurant

Our "King of the Road" columnist Lesley S. King always finds the best food off the beaten path in New Mexico. In this month's travelogue flick, she stops at El Bruno's Restaurant in Cuba. This popular restaurant was gutted by fire three years ago, but like a Phoenix, it has risen from the ashes and relocated across the street. Hazel and Bruno Herrera still serve the classics: rellenos, burritos and enchiladas. You can eat to your heart's fill before stopping by the Cuba Ranger District to see remnants of the area's ancient cultures, like the olla pot (pictured). Check out King's online video to see the Herreras making sopaipillas on our home page.

Taste of Santa Fe

Tickle Your Taste Buds at the Taste of Santa Fe

Foodies can rejoice at the summer's biggest culinary bash July 16-17 at the Santa Fe Railyard. The event supports the New Mexico History Museum. Don your fancy party duds for the Friday, July 16 gala dinner with celebrity chef John Rivera Sedlar and four other chefs. From 2-6 p.m. Saturday, July 17, you can sample cuisine from dozens of Santa Fe restaurants. The full schedule's posted at the Taste of Santa Fe website.

Stop by and say hello as the magazine staff sells cookbooks on Saturday. If you can't make it, but want to be there vicariously, you can still get our readers' favorite cookbook, The Best from New Mexico Kitchens, at our online gift catalog.

George Mendoza

Las Cruces Artist Shares His Colorful Vision

George Mendoza's eye-catching Free Spirit Collection vibrates with bold colors. His artwork is amazing on its own merit. The fact that Mendoza has extremely limited vision and is legally blind makes his artistic fabrics even more impressive. You've got to see this work for yourself. On the New Mexico Magazine website, we present a slide show of Mendoza at work.

Opera Tailgaters

Recipes for Tailgating at the Santa Fe Opera

Anything goes when tailgating at the Santa Fe Opera. But if you'd like a meal that will also get applause, check out our story, photos and recipes for elegant dishes straight from some of Santa Fe's top chefs. Rob Chickering of Galisteo Bistro was inspired by Mozart's The Magic Flute to create his recipe for Locavore Summer Salad, while French chef Laurent Rea of Ze French Bistro shares his secret ingredients to create Alsatian Black Cherry Bread Pudding (as a tribute to German-born French composer Jacques Offenbach who wrote The Tales of Hoffman).
