Isleta Pueblo

sleta Pueblo is centrally located in the Río Grande Valley, just 13 miles (21 km) south of Albuquerque and only five minutes away from I-25 via Exit 215. Originally established around the 1300s, the name Isleta comes from the Spanish language and means "Little Island." Isleta's current population is more than 3,166 (Census 2000 figures) and growing.

Many traditions, songs and dances are still practiced and passed down from generation to generation. Historic St. Augustine Church, built in 1612 and located on the main plaza, presents interesting history and traditional architecture. Isleta Pueblo's diverse terrain ranges from the forested Manzano Mountains on the east across the fertile Río Grande Valley to the desert mesa lands of the Río Puerco on the west.

Isleta now operates several business enterprises, including the Isleta Casino & Resort, a large casino complex of 300,000 square feet (casino floor: 100,000 sq. feet) which hosts 5 restaurants, big-name and local entertainment, (505-244-8191), alcohol service, a sports bar and gift shop, (800) 460-5686, (505) 869-2614; www.isletacasinoresort.com.

There's also Isleta Eagle Golf Course, which is a championship 27-hole golf course with beautiful panoramic views, (505) 869-0950; and the new Isleta Convenience Store that is open daily.

Enjoy yourself at the Isleta Lakes Recreational Complex with year-round fishing, picnicking and RV campsites. Call (505) 877-0370. The pueblo welcomes visitors; please call for special dates for the feast days and activities.
