Photography by Ann Murdy
Last year, former New Mexico Magazine Photo Contest award winner Ann Murdy captured the vibrant personalities of some of the 1,200 artists from more than 100 tribes who participate in Indian Market each year. The 100,000 visitors who trek to the Plaza for the premier art event are able to interact with the artists who have created the work. “The people are what make this event,” says Santa Fe-based Murdy.
A photographer for more than 30 years, Murdy moved to New Mexico from Los Angeles after experiencing the Land of Enchantment’s cultural events—the focus of her body of work. “The people here are really genuine. They have really immersed themselves in their cultures,” she says.
Slated this year for Sunday, August 23, the Native American Clothing Contest is the weekend’s most colorful—and most photographed—event. During the contest, participants model their Nations’ traditional regalia. The intricate costumes can take more than a year to create.
In addition to photographing cultural events in New Mexico, Ann Murdy has captured portraits, processions, and religious ceremonies in Guatemala and Mexico. For info: www.pbase.com/annmurdy, annphoto@earthlink.net
