Instituto Cervantes in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture of Spain, the Embassy of Spain and the National Hispanic Cultural Center are pleased to present the exhibition E•CO, from March 1, 2012 to May 31, 2012.

Curated by Claudi Carreras, the exhibition E•CO gathered photographic projects by twenty Latin American and European photographic collectives, each tasked with crafting a visual essay about one of the most important topics of our day: the environment. Free of curatorial influence, the collectives define "environment" for themselves and maintain their own production and editing processes. E•CO is a sample of the most pressing environmental problems, in the countries where the collectives are operating.

The Hubbard Museum of the American West is proud to announce the opening of its 2^nd "Biennale Grande" art show and exhibit in the Museum's Green Tree Gallery. Original art from some of New Mexico's best artists will be on display. The Biennale Grande is a juried fine arts competition that seeks to recognize and honor excellence in the contemporary visual arts of the American West. Thirty-nine (39) artists, representing 54 pieces of original art, were selected as finalists for the show. These artists and their works will benefit from regional recognition and exposure through New Mexico's first Smithsonian Affiliate museum, as well as the opportunity to sell their work(s) during the exhibition.

Wednesday, 16 May, 2012 - “Hiroshi Sugimoto” exhibition at UNM Art Museum, Albuquerque

HIROSHI SUGIMOTO is the first one-person exhibition in New Mexico of this internationally acclaimed master of photography. Organized by museum director, E. Luanne McKinnon, the show provides a focused overview of five of Mr. Sugimoto's (b. 1948, Tokyo, Japan) best-known projects which emphasize the characteristics of time, light, space, movement + form – the very nature of reality itself.

Selected works will be on view in the Van Deren Coke Gallery including the "Dioramas," photographed in exquisite life-like detail at natural history and other museums; "Seascapes", timeless vistas of air and water photographed at oceans from around the world; "Theatres," for which he set the exposure time of his camera to the entire length of the film that was being shown; "Lightning Fields," produced in the studio from experiments with electricity; and, "Mechanical Forms," exquisitely detailed 19th century tools, the choice of which was highly influenced by the artist's interest in Marcel Duchamp's The Large Glass (1915-1923). The exhibition has been organized with the generous cooperation of the Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco and courtesy of the artist.

The sweeping exhibition, RECONSIDERING THE PHOTOGRAPHIC MASTERPIECE, curated by Michele Penhall, will present approximately 100 works chosen from the museum's permanent collection—some on view for the first time—that encompasses the history of photography from 1843 to 2011. The exhibition centers upon the idea of an artist's signature or iconic image from an evolving and changed, historical perspective. Works from the 19th century to the present day by William Henry Fox Talbot, Julia Margaret Cameron, Edward Weston, August Sander, Diane Arbus, Gary Winnogrand, Hilla and Bernd Becher, Flor Garduno, and Vik Muniz with recent gifts and acquisitions of works by Alfred Stieglitz, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Jayne Hinds Bidaut, John Coplans, Tamas Deszo, Danny Lyon, Alec Soth, and Martin Parr will be included in this important exhibition.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Black-and-white images are the original form of photography and continue to set the standard for fine art photography. Join master photographer Craig Varjabedian to learn from his over twenty-five years experience in the medium, while discovering the uniqueness of New Mexico. Each participant will get hands-on instruction. This challenging workshop will take you away from the world of color and show you how to see and think in monochrome. Class discussions will help you understand the digital black-and- white development and printing process, along with offering feedback on your images. On field trips you will photograph the high desert land and light, the different cultures, mountain and mission.

While based in Santa Fe, you will travel to locations within easy reach of Santa Fe, where you will receive one-on-one instruction in the field, on technical and aesthetic issues. Images you might see in your viewfinder: adobe haciendas and churches, desert vistas and winding rivers, mountains and movie sets, sunrises and sunsets. Whether you are pointing your camera at a magnificent rock formation or capturing the dynamic weather that is common here, you'll spend time challenging yourself and improving your image making abilities.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

• Visualization and seeing in monochrome
• Understanding the power of light and luminosity in B&W images
• Processing RAW files for digital monochrome
• Traditional dark room printing techniques transferred into Photoshop
• Discussion of producing the fine monochrome print

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This workshop is terrific for all digital photographers well grounded in both manual and program modes of their digital camera. You need to be able to edit images, and to have a basic understanding of digital workflow and perform tonal and color adjustments in Photoshop on your laptop computer, in order to get the most out of this workshop.

WHAT TO BRING

Lots of enthusiasm for making pictures. Your digital camera with lenses, tripod, and filters. A laptop computer with Adobe Photoshop (version CS3, CS4 or CS5) or Photoshop Elements (version 6, 7, 8 or 9). We teach the class using Photoshop CS5. We will provide a complete list of necessary gear with enrollment.

Sally Condon's luminous abstract paintings express her connection to the natural world. As a long time gardener and keeper of bees she continually witnesses nature's beauty and regenerative forces. Her paintings are a metaphor for her feelings about the magic and beauty that surrounds her from a simple flower or leaf to the colors of a beautiful western sunset. In her compositions colors begin to breathe and resonate as they do in the natural world. Condon uses wax from her own bees to layer collaged images, leaves and flowers with oil paint. The resulting images are rich, seductive and full of natural magic.

Kathe Noe's softly hued semi-abstract monotypes and gravure prints seek to transform the poetry of her dream journal into a visual representation of her journey in life. Noe has travelled widely and there is an undeniable Asian influence in her work. Her images are richly layered and organic yet elegant and immediate. This is her first solo show at New Grounds Gallery.
